During the Second World War, Air Raid Precautions (ARP) estimate there were 57 bombing raids on Southampton and approximately 2,300 bombs were dropped amounting to over 470 tonnes of high explosives, as well as over 30,000 incendiary devices. Nearly 45,000 buildings were damaged, with most of the High Street destroyed.
